Financial Mobility in Disaster Prone Region
THE PHILIPPINES
Six months after the devastating Typhoon Yolanda, IDEO.ORG partnered with Mercy Corps and BanKO in an effort funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help rural communities rebuild their financial lives. We brought mobile banking to populations without any prior access to regulated banking services.
In a 3 week sprint, we went from discovery to offering real loans in the local market!

Agriculture Innovation
ETHIOPIA
In collaboration with Ethiopian Agriculture Transformation Agency and in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, IDEO.org designed a row planting machine for teff seed. Teff is the smallest grain cultivated by humans. The design was inspired by local farming practices with focus on repairability, and farmer adoption.
Our team delivered a functional V1 prototype as a baseline for manufacturable design.

Community Enterprise to Deliver
DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
One out of every five children don’t live to their fifth birthdays in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). ALIGHT engaged IDEO.org to help design a way to get better health care to the young children of the DRC, and together we designed Asili, a sustainable business that offers agricultural services, clean water, and a health clinic to its members.
Asili launched in July 2014 and in the span of mere months had already served a great number of people at its clinic, water point, and agricultural center.

Reproductive Health Education for Teenagers
ZAMBIA
In partnership with Marie Stopes International we designed a new family planing and reproductive health offerings for teenagers in rural Lusaka.
For girls who visit one of the three Diva Centres, 82% got contraceptive services and 36% returned for another visit.
